
Designing a Guanacaste garden that survives the dry season.
Every garden owner on the Pacific coast learns the same lesson at some point — usually in March. The soft, glossy leaves that looked perfect in November are now crisp at the edges. The lawn, once a continuous carpet, is patchy and brown in the spots the irrigation does not quite reach. The ornamental ginger, transplanted with such optimism in the green season, has given up entirely.
There is no mystery here. Guanacaste's dry season is a particular kind of test: roughly 150 days of essentially zero rainfall, daytime temperatures climbing into the high 30s, and a sun whose UV intensity at 10° north is unforgiving. A garden that was designed for the green season alone will spend February through April apologizing for itself.
The first thing we look for in any new client garden is the species mix. A surprising number of high-end villas were planted with material trucked down from cooler highland nurseries — coleus, certain calatheas, lush understory tropicals that genuinely belong 1,500 meters up the mountain, not at sea level. They look spectacular for a season. They are gone by the second dry.
Our default palette starts with what has been here for centuries and works outward. Bougainvillea — undervalued because it is everywhere — is a structural plant of extraordinary capability: it flowers more aggressively under stress, which is exactly the opposite of what most ornamentals do. Heliconia in the right cultivar holds through the dry with minimal water once established. Native palms (royal, fishtail, foxtail) provide the canopy almost any tropical garden wants. Bromeliads, properly placed in dappled shade, ask almost nothing of you.
The second variable is irrigation. A garden built for the dry season is not a garden that runs more water — it is a garden that runs water more intelligently. Pressure-compensated drip on planted beds. MP rotators (not standard spray heads) on lawn zones for matched precipitation rate. A controller that adjusts to evapotranspiration, not just a clock. A pressure regulator at the source so the system performs the same on Tuesday morning as Thursday afternoon.
The third variable, often overlooked, is mulch. A two-inch layer of locally chipped wood mulch over every planted bed reduces evaporative loss by something like 30%, suppresses the dry-season weeds that take advantage of bare soil, and slowly returns organic matter to the volcanic substrate. It is the single highest-leverage intervention available in a Guanacaste garden, and it costs almost nothing.
None of this is glamorous. A well-designed dry-season garden does not look like a magazine photograph — it looks like a garden that does not change much between November and June. Which is, in fact, the only standard that matters.
